Rurik, Evelyn
Evelyn Rurik is a native of Mobile, Alabama and currently residing in Fresno, California. She is a graduate of Providence School of Nursing and is a nurse by profession, and an artist by passion.
Married and the mother of three sons, she studied to become a certified National Council Flower Show Judge. Certification for judging required extensive knowledge of growing and exhibiting a variety of flowers and plants. In addition to this judging she also taught flower arranging and table settings to clubs and church groups. This love of flowers and plant material led to new venues of creativity, eventually settling into watercolor painting.
Evelyn is mainly recognized for her colorful florals, and her fruits and vegetable paintings. Choosing to paint from the live objects, she regularly searches farmers markets and friends gardens looking for perfect subject materials. Her work can be found in many private collections across the United States and as far away as Korea.

“Old Glory”, was painted with love, in memory of a dear friend who recently died an untimely death from cancer. In 2011 she watched with great interest the creation of “Second Hand Rose” (my last year’s chair donation). She mentioned a chair she wanted me to paint for the 2012 auction. The chair was one she, as teacher, used in her kindergarten classroom for over 30 years. The patriotic theme was chosen to honor her unwavering, flag-waving patriotism and love for America.

Last year my husband and I set out on a search for an unusual chair to transform into our 2012 auction entry. On a shelf up high in the back of an antique store in Santa Barbara, California we spied this little shell of a chair stripped to the bare wood, missing a seat and needing lots of repair. We subsequently learned, we had found an original Chippendale salesman’s sample/ model. After hours of TLC by George, my husband, it was my turn to work magic on our little ugly duckling. We are excited to present the Fairy Princess for this year’s Chair Affair.

Following a diligent search for the perfect “chair affair” piece, it was love -at -first glance when we happened upon this little shabby-chic rocker.
During the hours spent preplanning, scissoring and collaging the design in place, I wondered about “Second Hand Rose’s” history. How were all the ‘battle scars” acquired? Did she travel far? Who sat in her and rocked and took time to smell the roses? Did a Mom rock a baby to sleep? Perhaps a child rocked her dolly and looked at storybooks. It is a mystery!
Now that “Rose” has been renovated and beautified, we wonder what exciting adventures and surprises lie ahead.
The laser prints of the roses which have been collaged to the chair were from several original watercolor paintings by the artist.
Special thanks and appreciation are extended to my husband, George Rurik, for his encouragement and help in preparing “Rose” for her beautiful facelift. Also kudos to Andrew Rurik, my grandson for his computer expertise to execute the music to flow with the chair’s theme.

I have always loved the American Flag perhaps because of the wonderful colors red, white and blue... Over the years I have saved pictures/photos of flags... Creating the chair gave me the opportunity to use some of those treasures...
