Crow, Rebecca

Rebecca Crow thought she first painted with dots while decorating bowling balls for yard art, when lines and squiggles wouldn’t stick to the bowling balls as well as the dots did.  Her long-memoried sister reminded her, in the way that sisters do, that Rebecca was already a bit dotty while making batiks some decades earlier.

Gig Harbor residents for 13 years, Rebecca and her husband, David Salge, enjoy working together daily as the graphics department for a manufacturing company headquartered in Houston.

Rebecca considers it a great joy and privilege that she gets to volunteer twice a month at the NW Furniture Bank, assisting clients as they shop for furnishings to build new lives.

Cheerful Fruit Chair

The cheery 1940’s style oil cloth fabric for the seat was the starting point on this design.  Once I had that, all the dots and the fruit-from-dots followed.  I like its happy colors.

I found the chair in San Diego many years ago and flew it home with me to Houston, back when airlines were okay about bulky cardboard boxes being checked as luggage.  I reupholstered the seat, along with other mismatched wooden back chairs, and used it in my dining room for quite a while.  In recent years, this chair has been unused in the garage.  As I was considering what chair to paint for the Chair Affair, the lines of this chair’s back called out to me to follow their luscious curves with dots.

Pennsylvania Dutch Jungle Rocks

There I was, minding my own business and painting the usual dots and spirals on this lovely, comfy rocker when suddenly, unbidden, a stylized tulip appeared— straight off my childhood Pennsylvania Dutch lapboard!  Okay, I can go along with that, thought I, even though the colors had taken a surprisingly tropical turn.

I Painted more of my lapboard's flower motifs onto the seat and then: what's this? A vine had insinuated itself onto the seat next to the central tulip. And then that vine sprouted thorns! Never one to buck the odd vagaries of my creations' demands, I soldiered on, placing dots and thorns and Pensylvania Dutch motifs as the required of me.
